McCarthyismIn the time after WW II people became more and more fearful of communists. Communism was spreading and people feared that it would spread and take over the world. McCarthy was the senator of Wisconsin in 1946, one of the reasons that he was able to get elected was that he emphasized that his opponents had not enlisted in WW II but that he had. After he was elected McCarthy came out with a list of 205 names of people in the State Department who were allegedly a part of the Communist party. The Senate investigated further but found no proof of communism.

HUAC (House Un-American Activities COMMITTEE)HUAC was created in 1938 to investigate alleged disloyalty and to supervise people that were suspected of having communist ties. To find communists HUAC often pressured witnesses to surrender names of people that they knew. This technique resulted with many people being unduly convicted as communists.
